A bittersweet tale of lost love, set against the backdrop of Peru's stunning coastline. A respected local fisherman and father-to-be is threatened by a visiting artist who is viewed as a threat by the villagers.  Presented by the Americas Research Group at Newcastle University. The film will be followed by informal discussion - all welcome to stay.

Undertow is Javier Fuentes-Leon's feature film directorial debut. The film made the long list for the Best Foreign Language Oscar, but unfortunately didn't make the final short list.  It did, however, win the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as many others. Critics have praised the film's portrayal of complex emotions, powerful relationships between characters and "its ability to take a human story and frame it as a parable, without losing a bit of credibility or irresistible heart" (San Francisco Chronicle).
