Nicolas Rey's first feature begins as a documentary about everyday life in a French ski resort. Gradually the film's attention shifts to the dominant presence of the aluminium industry in the area. This white gold was the region's main economy until the 1960s, when it was replaced by winter sports. Although these two industries deal with different raw materials they raise the same question about the relationship between industry and the state. Shot on 16mm treated with extreme photochemical techniques, the film powerfully recalls important phases of industrial history. Regional Premiere. 2005.
