FILM AT 7.30PM: TROPICALIA (2012, Dir Marcelo Machada, 87 mins, DVD, Portuguese/English)

A new documentary that delves into the ‘explosion’ of the Tropicalia movement in Brazil in the late ‘60s. Featuring stunning archive footage of the charismatic figureheads including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil amongst many others, it’s a wonderfully evocative and inspiring snapshot of the movement and its wider impact and influence around the world.

REVIEWS OF THE FILM

"Impressive" - Sight & Sound
"Documentary of the month" - UNCUT
‘The Tropicália movement had straw beds, paddling pools and even its own parrots. What a great way to fight the Brazilian dictatorship’ - THE GUARDIAN
Tropicália wasn’t a style or a movement as much as an atmosphere, a rush of youthful, cosmopolitan, liberationist optimism that broke over Brazil like a sun shower and soaked into everything: art, music, fashion, film, theater, literature’ - NEW YORK TIMES
