___________________________________________________

UnderWire, the UK's only short film festival dedicated to showcasing the raw cinematic talents of women, is heading to The Star and Shadow Cinema

We are proud to be holding this very special night, aiming to encourage women who make films locally to come and show their work (even if it’s a work in progress!) and to chat and meet other artists/filmmakers!

Even if you wouldn’t call yourself a “filmmaker/artist” as such, and even if you make films only occasionally,. This night is for you – no need to have any official certificated title to participate.

SEND US DETAILS

If you would like to show your work, it would be great if you could send an email about it to Helen Jack, director of the UnderWire Film Festival (helen@underwirefestival.com). Please include your name, what role you played in the film (Director, Composer, Editor, etc), length and whether it is a completed film or a work in progress.

There is no censorship or selection process of any type, all the films submitted will be shown – we just need to keep track of how many films we have, that’s why we would need some details.

LOCAL FILMMAKERS WHO HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED A FILM:

- Ellie Land: Centerfold (2012, 9 min)

When documentary filmmaker Ellie Land saw reports in the national press about an increasing trend in women undergoing labia surgery to neaten the appearance of their genitals, she set out to make a documentary exploring the subject.

Centrefold is an award-winning animated documentary presenting the personal accounts of three women who have had a labiaplasty.

- Hedley Sugar-Wells: Dragged By the Balls (2012, 18 min)

The film follows the legendary North-East drag queen, Miss Ophelia Balls. In between transitioning from Gary Short, the audience is shown how a contemporary salaried Drag Queen earns her living moving seamlessly between predominantly gay and mostly straight audiences. Balls is not the political, performance artist of Ocana, nor the vogueing queens of Paris is Burning. She is not living a liminal life on the edge of our society, surviving through prostitution or theft, rather Balls is shown as the hard-working, professional entertainer that she is.

- A 10 minute extract from Olga Kaliszer' film, Correspondance (which is 57 min long):

Olga Kaliszer’s work investigates the basis and structure of knowledge. In her latest film correspondence, she challenges conventionalrepresentation of historical knowledge. Using performance as a counterpoint to personal testimony, she explores new ways of knowing.

We would like to show more films though, so please contact us or come on the night so that we can show your film!

- Rosanna Skett: Half Sleep

This film is about altered states of consciousness. The piece communicates a crowded mental state on the periphery ofsleep, more specifically during extended periods of travel and the upheaval it can cause to normality and routine.During the cycles of sleep, the stage in which we dream the most frequently is that of ‘Rapid Eye Movement’, this is known to be crucial in the creation of memories. Elements of this can cross over into the space between wakefulness and sleep, often known as hypnagogia; especially if the individual is experiencing disturbed sleep patterns.

- Katja Roberts: The Ball (2010, 11min)

'The Ball' portrays the tender beginnings of a burgeoning childhood friendship in which communication takes on touching, funny and inventive forms.

- Hazel Plater will show a trailer for a documentary that she's working on, and which is about the Riverside Venue in Newcastle.
