Tonight there will be music from the film before the film.

An introduction called choking the monkey and the film will be followed by an audience discussion with those Star & Shadow favourites, The Newcastle Philosophy Society.

The plot

When the capsule of the Scoop Mission returns to Earth and lands in the small town of Piedmont, it brings a mutant living being and all the population, except a crying baby and an old man with ulcer, dies with clotted blood. A team of five scientists - the leader Dr. Jeremy Stone, Dr. Charles Dutton, Dr. Mark Hall, Dr. Ruth Leavitt and Dr. Kirkie - are summoned and gathered together in the top secret Wildfire facility.

Fighting against time, they try to understand the reason why the old man and the baby survived and research an antidote to Andromeda, the ultimate biological weapon.

Reviews

"Wise (and Crichton) concoct the most absorbing, riveting take on science fiction tempered with science fact."- Empire

"As with his masterful adaptation of Shirley Jackson's seminal horror novel The Haunting of Hill House just seven years earlier, director Wise takes few liberties with Michael Crichton's breakthrough best-seller and the film is all the stronger for it. A group of eggheads are given just days to find a way of combating an alien virus carried back to Earth aboard a space probe, or face the extinction of the human race. With its all-powerful government agencies and pervasive air of secrecy, the film can also be considered a close relation of such paranoid 70s political thrillers as The Parallax View." - Film 4
