Every 4th January the Star and Shadow shows a programme of DIY animation, to celebrate the artistic legacy of filmmaker Helen Hill.

Last year we showed 'The House of Sweet Magic', courtesy of the Harvard Film Archive - a selection of Helen's short animations, including the celebrated Scratch and Crow (1995).

This year we're extremely honoured to be showing The Florestine Collection (2011), Helen's last film, completed after her death by Paul Gailiunas, her surviving partner. Helen Hill's films are hands-on, DIY, full of kitchen-table animation and a sense of wide-eyed joy.

She was political, believed that everyone should make films, and worked hard to make this happen. “If there was going to be a Revolution, Helen was determined that it should include vegan cake, cotton candy art, and lots of smooching”.

A wonderful way to start the new year, come and join us!
