To commemorate four decades since the beginning of one of the most important historical events in the region’s history we are screening 3 episodes of one of the most important British television programmes of all time.

We will begin with the first episode of the show, ‘1964’, where it all began and establishing our four main characters; Nicky, Tosker, Mary and Geordie

We then move on to perhaps the most powerful and explosive episode in the series and most appropriately titled, ‘1984’, which follows the characters as the Miners Strike looms large over their lives and over Tyneside itself

And to give closure to our characters we will be showing the final episode of the mini-series, chronicling Tyneside life moving into the New Labour era of ‘1995’.

Starring acting superstars to be Gina McKee, Mark Strong, Christopher Ecclestone and Daniel Craig.

Described as ‘faultless’ at its time of release, Our Friends in the North has become one of the most important series in the landscape of television and possibly the most important depiction of life in Tyneside.

With a discussion to follow which will led by Northumbria British television academics and special guest speakers to be announced so please keep an eye out for further updates
