Robin Williamson

Tempo Tempo and the Star & Shadow Cinema are delighted to welcome Robin Williamson, folk legend and co-founder of 60’s Scottish outfit The Incredible String Band, one of the most unusual, innovative and strangest bands to have been produced by the UK, plus support from Cath & Phil Tyler and Richard Dawson.

After a debut album which gave but a hint of things to come, Mike Heron and Robin Williamson recorded ‘The 5000 Spirits or t...he Layers of the Onion’, an audaciously eclectic mix of bookish folk music, hippy love songs and Eastern modalities. They soon became the-name-to-drop-in-interviews for luminaries such as Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan, and in their annum mirabilis of 1968 they practically defined the hippy counterculture in the extraordinary albums ‘The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter’ and ‘Wee Tam and the Big Huge’, two albums of great musical complexity that took the concept of Folk music to whole new levels.

Since splitting with Mike Heron, Robin has continued to produce outstanding music and to explore various definitions and outlines of Folk, teaching himself the fiddle and the harp and going down the route of story-telling for a few years, even earning himself the title of Official Bard of Cardiff.

SUPPORT
--------------

We have fantastic support from Cath & Phil Tyler and Richard Dawson. With no need for introductions, Cath & Phil Tyler will be with us to complete a night of hallucinatory folk. If you live in Newcastle you’ll know who they are, but just in case you don’t, here are some reviews:

"Folk moves into a new era with Cath and Phil. Their combination of earthiness and grit, raw yet heartfelt and beautiful singing and immaculate playing makes this one of the most exciting and most moving albums I've heard in a long while." - Fiona Talkington, ‘Late Junction’, BBC Radio 3

“The twining harmonies…recall the heyday of English pastoral folk song” - The Wire

“Dumb Supper is one of those rare modern folk albums that will find a home in both the longstanding ‘traditional’ music community and among those attracted to the form's more experimental and lo-fi possibilities….It’s a weird looking-glass effect many folk fans will be familiar with: the straighter you play it, the stranger it gets…Shirley Collins always understood this and so do Cath & Phil Tyler.” - Frances Morgan, Plan B Magazine

Finally, You might remember Newcastle’s lovely and loveable Richard Dawson from his appearance on The Culture Show about a year back. If you live in Newcastle you probably already know his stuff and why it’s worth you coming along on the night. If you don’t know him, I can say that he’s one of my favourite musicians at the moment and would go as far as to say that in a few years I might just count his intelligent, moving and humorous lyrics in the same breath as Smog.
