KAALA SONA / BLACK GOLD- a two-part show on Star & Shadow radio playing music from Indian cinema collected on vinyl between the 1960's to the 1990's by my dad Jagdish Solanki.

Expect to hear hi-energy, disco, trad, garage, big band and covers from the 1940’s onwards with scratches & all, hand-picked from over 800 records and played by his daughter Sneha.

KAALA SONA / BLACK GOLD is a collection of vinyl amassed between the late 1960's to the 1990's by Jagdish Solanki in Leicester. Born in Mombasa, Kenya under British Colonial rule, Jagdish arrived in England during the late 60's with his mother. He then started collecting music from Indian Cinema in the form of vinyl from local stores, extended family, the regional Gujarati network and from withdrawn stock at local lending libraries. Having never lived in India, his entire live was overshadowed by the results of imperialism and partition spanning three continents.

This collection of Indian film music on vinyl has created a meaningful cultural connection over displacement for my family and the other hands it has passed through previously.
