Newcastle record label Signals presents Dziga Vertov’s 1929 Soviet experiment in ‘cinematic communication’ Man with a Man Movie Camera at Star & Shadow with a special original soundtrack and score produced by UK Electro/Techno DJ and producer Ali Renault  and mixed live to accompany the screening.

Like a lot of innovative early cinema the film was derided by critics on its release. Sergei Eisenstein called it “pointless camera hooliganism"

Modern critics have been kinder, regularly ranking it in top tens of greatest films ever made. Writer Jonathan Romney called it "an exuberant manifesto that celebrates the infinite possibilities of what cinema can be.”

Ali Renault is well known on underground circuits in the UK and across Europe. Star & Shadow regulars may recognise him as one half of the duo Heartbreak, others might know him for running the labels Human Shield and Vivod.

He’s had a prolific output over the last 20 years, as Ali Renault but also under his darker more electro tinged moniker Cestrian, with releases on labels such as Unknown to the Unknown, Bunker, MNX, Bordello A Parigi, Dissident and Moustache Records.
