In her breakout role the gorgeous Lucille Ball plays May, a nightclub singer who Louis (Red Skelton), falls in love with, but her heart belongs to the penniless Alec (Gene Kelly). When Louis wins a fortune, May marries him for his money. Predictable plot lines so far, until Louis accidentally sips a laced drink and the film blossoms out to include an extended dream-fantasy sequence. Louis dreams he's inept french King Louis XV, with Alec as his enemy the 'Black Arrow, and May is Madame DuBarry. The immense cast also includes Rags Ragland, an early Zero Mostel and features music by the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. A feast for the eyes, the production values are superb with lavish colour and exquisite costumes.
