After moving to an idyllic home in the countryside, life seems perfect for the Creed family...but not for long. Louis and Rachel Creed and their two young children settle in to a house that sits next door to a pet cemetery - built on an ancient Indian burial ground. Their mysterious new neighbor, Jud Crandall, hides the cemetery's darkest secret...until a family tragedy brings the secret to life. Now, an unthinkable evil is about to be resurrected…
PET SEMATARY is one of the most interesting Stephen King adaptations as well as one of his darkest, most disturbing and under appreciated (as well as nastiest - some definite thematic parallels with CUJO another cocaine era King movie) - the script written by the man himself also making a cameo appearance as a priest. Also a female director at the helm - Mary Lambert which was (sadly) unusual in that era.
Mainly works as a meditation on the trauma of loss and the perils of tampering with the natural order as well as a “be careful what you wish for” style monkey’s paw effect horror the enduring influence of which can be seen in recent horror films such as Curry Barker’s OBSESSION. One of a number of 1980s horror films to use the problematic Indian burial ground trope to warn against the Promethean ambition of playing god and the forbidden force of resurrection. I found the score, the set design and the camera work really impactful when I first watched it on video in the early 90s and I was blown away the RAMONES theme. This screening should be special.
