Dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine (Shirley MacLaine) wants more from life, mostly she wants to be in love. When she meets the nervous and nerdy Oscar (John McMartin) stuck in an elevator, it seems she may finally have a chance at romantic happiness — but will Oscar overlook Charity’s colorful past?
