Dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine (Shirley MacLaine) wants more from life, mostly she wants to be in love. When she meets the nervous and nerdy Oscar (John McMartin) stuck in an elevator, it seems she may finally have a chance at romantic happiness — but will Oscar overlook Charity’s colorful past?
Choreographed by Gwen Vernon (uncredited #notallmen) and Bob Fosse, and based on Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, this bold, vibrant and beautifully shot musical is a delight, with star turns from Shirley MacLaine, Chita Rivera, Paula Kelly and a psychedelic performance from Sammy Davis Jnr. Packed with hits like Big Spender and If My Friends Could See Me Now and featuring Vernon/Fosse's famously intricate and kooky dance numbers, this is a truly unusual, energetic and vital film.
